One of the unique things about Rainy Pass Lodge is our herd of horses. The current herd was started in the late 1970's, but there is film footage of horses being used in this area in the 1920's. Back then horses were almost essential to living in this remote wild country. Today, they enable guests to experience a slice of that life.
Rainy Pass Lodge horses live a good life! They are free to roam the countryside about eight months of the year. Their hair grows out long in the winter to help keep them warm. Since they are not kept in small enclosures, they get plenty of exercise and extra grazing. Horses have lived well into their 30's out there, which is pretty old for a horse.

Some of the horses in the current herd were actually born out there, but breeding has not been done in over 15 years. Today, we fly new members of the herd in via a Sky Van. It costs about $3500 for 2 horses. Feed also has to be flown in. The cost in town is about $13 a bag but by the time it's flown to the Lodge, it costs around $50 a bag and our herd goes through about four bags a day! Maintaining the herd is expensive, but well worth it as it truly brings you back in time. Many Lodge guests take their very first horse ride while staying with us – and relish the chance to travel like the early settlers did.
