IDITAROD
The Last Great Race

On the first weekend of March, the Iditarod Dog Sled Race mushes through Rainy Pass Lodge. This legendary event, known as “The Last Great Race” is a contest of endurance and triumph over the hostile winter wilderness—it commemorates the brave mushers who took lifesaving serum to Nome, Alaska during the Diphtheria epidemic of 1925. You can’t compare the Iditarod to any other competitive event in the world! It is a 1049mile race over the roughest, most beautiful terrain ‘Mother Nature’ can serve up. Mushers and their dog teams face jagged mountain ranges, frozen rivers, dense forests, desolate tundra and miles of windswept coast. The Iditarod depends on thousands of volunteers all along the way and you can be a part of this incredible journey!

We always fill up for this unique event, reserve your spot now and don't miss out on the winter fun.
Rainy Pass Lodge on Puntilla Lake is an official checkpoint for the Iditarod Dog Sled Race.  As a guest of the lodge you can get right into the action and see the dogs up-close, meet the mushers, ride the trail and more.  Come join us for a few days of fun the beginning of March for this chance of a lifetime event.

The ceremonial start of the race is the first Saturday in March each year, so we recommend flying into the lodge on Sunday so you can watch the racers come through on Monday into Tuesday.  Enjoy a live band private performance for our guests and lots of fun activities throughout your stay.  Extend your trip a day or two and ride up the Iditarod Trail to pick up dropped dog booties and get your picture taken by the sign at the highest spot on the Iditarod Trail.
